We use Tauri (opens in a new tab) as our app shell. We maintain the phcode-tauri-shell (opens in a new tab) and phcode static website (opens in a new tab) code in two separate repositories. This separation is intended to simplify development by distinctly isolating the shell and phcode. For instance, if you are solely developing the shell internals, you can always construct an empty tauri app without having to build phoenix.
Follow the below instructions to set up development environment.
npm install -g gulp-cli (use sudo npm install -g gulp-cli in *nix systems)Get phoenix (opens in a new tab) and phoenix-desktop (opens in a new tab) into two folders in your computer. _IMPORTANT:_ phoenix and phoenix-desktop should be within the same parent directory!!!
For development, tauri will directly load the phcode static server url "localhost:8000/src" from the phoenix repo. So you can quickly iterate changes without rebuilding tauri src for each change. Just a simple reload will suffice.
phoenix by following the steps.Detailed instructions on how to setup and run phoenix are available here (opens in a new tab)
Phoenix Desktop will start compiling and the editor window should appear after the build is done.
phoenix-desktop folder built with Tauri will be auto compiled and live patched on save.phoenix folder, just reload Phoenix by pressing f5 in the Phoenix window just like you would do on the browser versions of Phoenix.Description adapted from the project README.

Yes. Phoenix Desktop is free and open source under the GNU AGPL 3.0. AppsXi lists the maintainers' official release and does not charge for it.
AppsXi downloads every version of Phoenix Desktop from the maintainers' official GitHub release and checks it before it is listed. For version prod-app-v5.2.5 (checked Oct 14, 2026), the Windows download is Authenticode signed, each file matches the checksum GitHub publishes for the release, byte for byte and a malware scan found nothing.
Phoenix Desktop is an open source project by Phoenix Code on GitHub (phcode-dev/phoenix-desktop). Help and bug reports go to its maintainers there.
